The Function of IRI Army Air Corps in Khoramshahr Epic

Navideshahed: IRI Army Air Corps of the Islamic Republic of Iran was one of the pioneers of presence in defending the revolution and Islamic Iran.

On the anniversary of Khorramshahr liberation, the Foundation for Preservation of Holy Works and Values of Sacred Defense Era has presented a note regarding the role of Air Corps at the beginning of war and during the liberation of Khorramshahr to the Iranian Student’s News Agency Culture Service.

The text of the note is as follows:

Many months before the Imposed War, the personnel of Air Corps got involved in the conflict against domestic bandits and the foreign hired agents in Kurdistan and most of the western and northwestern areas of Iran. The conflict was so intensive and they fought against in the best unity form possible. They also granted many martyrs in this way to the Islamic revolution as well that we can name martyr ‘Vatan Parvar’. This martyr during the initial days of the Iran-Iraq war attended the southern battlefields and he struggled to arrange the forces of the Air Corps and different flights.

Martyr Vatan Parvar would do the first fight himself in every day with an exemplary tact and courage and he would transfer the first information regarding the enemy forces and the procedure of their stationing to the other pilots and at end of each day he himself would be present in the war zone as a commander and he would do the final flight of the day as well in order to get aware of the ultimate movements of enemy in a way that within a short period of time he had become one of the significant information sources for the war veterans and specially the Army 92 of Ahvaz.

Commander Brigadier General Zakeri who would serve as intelligence officer in the Armored Army 92 of Ahvaz would always state that he is one of the main pillars for gathering information.

When the Air Corps had not get released from the Kurdistan violations, went to the battlefields of Iran-Iraq war, when this war began. The valuable and successful experiences of this helicopter unit in facing with anti-revolutionary militants and staying in the most difficult passing mountains of Zagros who had put many of the experienced forces in trouble caused that his abilities to be under the attention of the war commanders seriously as well and on the other side, the quick reaction of him would not give an opportunity to the enemy to think or make a decision and he would station in any part that he wanted in the shortest time possible. Only such an ability could stand against the sudden and surprising attacks of the Iraqi Baathist regime and in fact he played a significant role in stopping and stabilizing the enemy headquarters.

During the initial moments of the Imposed War Era and the rapid and continuous attacks of the Iraq’s ground force and armored forces only within two days he prepared the helicopters and 40 helicopters from Esfahan Air Base moved towards Khuzistan and of course at that time some other teams from other stations such as Kermanshah were trying to stop enemy in the west and northwest of Iran. This number of helicopters stationed in the armored Army 92 of Ahvaz city and in addition of them 10 Cobra helicopters and Ranjer jets prepared in order to directly defend the country and attacking the enemy forces that were moving towards Abadan island and they stationed in Zolfaghariyeh mountain. Also the number of 12 Shenuk helicopters and 205 helicopters of transport for delivery of the forces of Army, Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps and people forces have come to Mahshahr to defend Khorramshahr and they would fly on Abadan city and then after passing from Karoon River in west of Abadan, they would stay in Khorramshahr.

Khorramshahr city had been divided into two eastern and western part by a river and the helicopters Shenuk, 205 and 215 would take the forces in the eastern part of Abadan city and they would take equipments, munitions and foods to the same place as well and these forces by crossing the river would defend Khorramshahr city. These helicopters would deliver the refugees, wounded and martyrs when they wanted to return to Abadan city and most of the refugees were women, children and elderly.

If the commanders would decide to do such a work by boats or engine-boats, it would take time at least for 24 hours. While the helicopters of Air Corps would do this operation within one or two hours; in addition to that the presence of Air Corps in Zolfaghariyeh Mountain would boost the morale of war veterans and people too and when they would hear the sound of these helicopters they would get happy and delighted and they would join the defender queues.

Iraq and the Ba’ath party according to their calculations had considered three days to capture Ahvaz city and according to the initial advancement of Iraqis, this issue was not impossible and out of imagination too. But within 34 days of strong resistance of the Army forces along with the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps and people forces, it caused that the Army to strengthen and stabilize its positions in Abadan city and to stop Iraq in Khorramshahr city. While if they would capture Khorramshahr quickly, they would move towards Abadan and Mahshahr cities of this capture and then they would move towards Ahvaz. But the wisdom, speed and courage of Iranian Army forces and other forces by the assistance of helicopters of Air Corps changed the dream of Saddam Hussein into a very dreadful nightmare for Saddam Hussein and exactly after a few months passing of that time, Khorramshahr was changed into the grave of attackers. This city was named as the city of blood due to the martyrdom of some martyrs of the Army, Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, Basijis and some pilots such as Azin, Vatan Parvar, Hashemi and so on.”?
