"Hidden Weapons which were so dangerous"

A glance to the Doctrine of Chemical Warfare of the Baathist Regime

If we have a glance to our surroundings, we can observe that everyday a flower from the souvenirs of sacred defense would be martyred. We can conclude that those persons who have been exposed to chemical weapons during the Sacred Defense Era have to suffer so much and most of the times these beloved persons join to their martyred friends.

In fact it is the result that Saddam Hussein has left after the Imposed War Era. The countries that claim they support human rights not only during the Iran-Iraq War, but also after Iran-Iraq war kept quiet and they attempted to cooperate with the Baathist regime.

This text is a survey which analyzes the usage of chemical weapons during the Imposed War Era by the Baathist forces. The Baathist regime would use chemical weapons against Iranians during Iran-Iraq War when this regime felt that it can not resist anymore against Iranian veterans. This regime used chemical weapons against Iranian for several times dastardly. This regime knew if it does not use chemical weapons for sure it will be defeated by the Islamic Republic of Iran immediately. The Iraqi regime used chemical weapons in the military operation of Kheibar for the first time. It used a huge amount of chemical agents against the innocent troops of Iran. This weapon of mass destruction caused many Iranian fighters to be exposed to chemical weapons or to be martyred. Only in the chemical which took place in "Hoorol-Hoveizeh" in February 27, 1984 more than 1100 persons were exposed to chemical weapons.

This regime used chemical weapons in the military operation of Badr for the second time. This chemical attack took place from March 11, 1984 to April 18, 1985. During this time the Baathist forces used chemical weapons for 50 times dastardly.

The usage of chemical weapons and the abovementioned aspects have been written in the book "Passing Operation" Also some officials of Iraq such as the Iraqi colonel, Hamid Hussein Flak and Commander Hosham Madoom have confirmed the accuracy of these aspects. Commander Hosham Madoom stated that many chemical bombs were dropped on Iranian forces in Hoor and different chemical agents were used in the Bad military operation.

The Iraqi forces used chemical weapons for eight times during the military operation of Valfajr 8 which took place in February 9, 1986. During one of these attacks which took place on Fav-Basra road about 8500 Iranian veterans were exposed to chemical weapons. During these military operations, the Baathist Army used some agents such as mustard, cyanide, Nerve etc.

The Iraqi colonel, Hamid Hussein Felak has expressed many realities in this field so that you can see them as they are mentioned bellow:

The Iraqi colonel, Hamid Hussein Felak: When our military fighters used chemical weapons in the military operation of Valfajr 8, at that time I understood that we are the real criminals of the world. We knew that our commanders are violating the human rights by doing such inhumanity activities. The chemical shells would be shot towards the Islamic veterans of Iran. The mustard and nerve gases which were so dangerous were dispersed in the operative land in which the Iranian forces were fighting.

At this time we received a telegraph as follows: The Iranian forces that are in Fav will use chemical weapons to complete their victory, so in this case we need to use chemical weapons as well. We knew that our military leaders were deceiving us and that Iranian forces will never use chemical weapons, but it was a policy for the usage of chemical weapons. Each time that we wanted to use chemical weapons against Iranians we would use this policy. Our commanders wanted to bring a bad imagination towards the Iranian fighter that they are also violating human rights and they will use chemical weapons against Iraqis.

But a great miracle occurred and I can strongly express it as an important belief and divine lesson.

The Meteorology Organization of Iraq had predicted the atmospheric situation before the usage of chemical weapons. But the direction of wind was changed during the usage of chemical weapons and the chemical gases were directed towards the Iraqi forces. In fact it was a divine lesson. God wanted to punish us by this method.

The Iraqi lieutenant-colonel Sobhi Alseraj, the official of technical warfare of the 7th corps said: I had considered the atmospheric conditions a few days before the usage of chemical gases, it was clear that the direction of wind won't be changed. I really wondered when I witnessed that the direction of wind was changed. I never made any mistakes, but it happened for us.

The Iraqi lieutenant-colonel Sobhi Alseraj said to Maher Abdol-Rashid: I attempted so much in this field and I used all the information, but it seemed that the divine destiny had caused such event to be occurred.

Brigadier General Abdol-Razagh Al-Hali said: When lieutenant-colonel Sobhi Alseraj was talking about this matter, he had managed the chemical attacks against Iranian troops and he was explaining this matter to Maher Abdol-Rashid. I could see everything was going such a miracle.

Maher Al-Rashid was talking about his sacrifices and strengths.

- What should I do, he said?

- Maher Abol-Rashid answered: I say nothing; we must ask some questions from the general commander of all the forces.

- Do you want to hear what he says yourself?

- Colonel answered: yes

- Maher Abdol-Rashid said: The Colonel who has managed this chemical attack is present here, what should we do with him?

- Saddam Hussein said: I do not want anything; only he must go to the operative land in which the chemical gases have been dispersed so that he must suffer the pains that his Iraqi fighters are suffering from.

- Colonel Al-Saraj did not have any solution except obeying the demand of Saddam Hussein.

He was dispatched to the operative land in which the chemical gases had been dispersed. Since he was so wise, he surrendered to the Iranian forces.

The colonel Hamid Hussein Falak estimates the losses of this chemical attack which was directed by wind towards the Iraqi forces as follows:

1. The losses for the brigade of fifth presidential guard 70 %

2. The losses for the brigade of sixth presidential guard 75 %

3. The losses for the armored brigade 60 %

4. The losses for the Swift brigade of the fourth corps, 50 %

The Iraqi regime used chemical weapons extensively in the military operation of Karbala 5. Before this chemical attack, the Baathist forces had dropped chemical bombs by aircrafts for ten times and with artilleries for five times. After this military operation, the Iraqi regime used chemical weapons from January 18, 1987 until February 20, 1987. During this time more than seven thousands of shells and rockets were shot towards Iranian forces. Another deadly attack by chemical gases took place on June 28, 1988. The Iraqi forces bombarded Sardasht city with chemical bombs. 8000 persons were exposed to chemical weapons and 130 persons were martyred on the same day. Sardasht has been considered as the first city of the world which has been attacked by chemical gases.

Eight Iraqi villages with a population of Kurdish people were bombarded by chemical gases in April 1988. These attacks were directed by the Iraqi regime of Saddam Hussein. These villages were located in Soleimaniyeh province of Iraq.

But the Iraqi regime did not give up its chemical attacks and it targeted Halabja city by chemical weapons on March 17, 1988. More than 5 thousands of innocent people were killed in this chemical genocide.
