A Commander Who Was a Father to His Soldiers

NAVIDESHAHED- Major General Masoud Monfared Niaki was a defining figure in the history of the Iranian Army. Born in Amol in May 1929, he entered the Officer Cadet College in 1952, driven by a deep commitment to military service. Upon graduation, he began his career in the Armored Corps, rising through the ranks to become a pivotal commander.
By the early 1980s, Monfared Niaki’s leadership was vital. He served as the Commander of the 88th Armored Division in Zahedan and later commanded the 92nd Armored Division in Ahvaz. His tactical expertise was instrumental in major operations during the Sacred Defense, including Tariq al-Quds, Fath al-Mobin, Beit al-Moqaddas, Valfajr, and Ramadan. Recognized for his bravery, he served as Deputy Commander of the Army Ground Forces in the South, where he was essential to the planning of key defensive operations.
His son, Seyed Ebrahim Monfared Niaki, recalls the heavy toll his father’s dedication took on their family, particularly during the illness of his younger sister.
“My father was commanding the 92nd Armored Division in Khuzestan when my sister’s health began to fail rapidly,” Ebrahim recounted. “Doctors offered no hope for her recovery. My father adored his youngest daughter, and the bond between them was profound. We called his headquarters, desperate to bring him home for one last farewell.”
“But he refused to leave his post. He told my mother that he could not justify abandoning his men to be with his family, even in such a tragic moment. He said, ‘The soldiers fighting against the Ba’athist forces are all my children. It is my duty to stay by their side and fight with them.’”
“My sister passed away at the age of 16,” Ebrahim added. “Even after her funeral, my father could not return home for another forty-seven days.”
Major General Monfared Niaki continued to serve his country with unwavering resolve until he was martyred in action on July 28, 1985. His legacy remains not only that of a brilliant military strategist but of a man whose sense of duty to his nation was absolute.
